Hey there!

I'm Dr. Kate

Veterinary Clinical Pathologist & Founder of the Veterinary Cytology Schoolhouse

Let me tell you a story of how this all started.

Picture this:

I'm peering through the oculars, and I see it.

I jump out of my seat. I can't believe this is the cause of this dog's pleural effusion! My heart's pounding with excitement. The answer is right there.

It's 2016, and I'm a brand new pathologist working inside a busy multi-specialty hospital.

My husband, an ER vet, is in the ICU, waiting for the patient's results. "It's Blasto!", I shout. Come look!

The thrill of finding the answer was only second to the excitement of sharing it with the team who was trying to help this dog.

The thing is, you can only pull your busy ER husband into your office to nerd out over slides every so often.

So, I had an idea. A Facebook group!

I'll share the cool things I'm seeing so vets can see what their patient's diseases really look like under the microscope. The Veterinary Cytology Coffeehouse group was born.

Before I knew it, there were a thousand members. Then another thousand! And another. Before long, the group grew to over 75,000 veterinary professionals.

What started as a humble little corner of the internet quickly turned into living classroom. A place where vet professionals were learning with and from each other.

Soon, something became so clear it was like a smack in the face.

Veterinary practitioners want to learn cytology. But they don't have what they need to get there.

The realization lit a fire in me, and I became a woman on a mission.

I decided to help veterinarians get better at cytology by giving them the tools, guidance, and resources they need to build their skills at the microscope.

That's when I quit my job.

Since then, I've taught thousands of veterinary professionals through my courses, programs, and services.

I've seen where they struggle. I've learned how to teach in a way that simplifies an otherwise complex topic.

Watching veterinarians grow in their cytology skills and confidence has been the greatest professional joy of my life.

Truly, nothing can replace the feeling of watching frustration turn into fascination, and confusion into confidence.

It's what keeps me motivated every single day!

What VCS looks like today

Coffee. Kids. VCS. Repeat.

That's what most days look like for Will and I. If we're not at our kitchen table then we're in our RV at a National Park doing the same.

But no matter where we are, we're always brainstorming how to make our courses, programs, and resources here in VCS even better.

What's it like working with your spouse, you might ask? Oh, let me tell you...our brains work verrrrry differently. I'm the over-analytic, creative dreamer and he the down-to-earth, tactical go-getter. Honestly though? It's a good combo, and it helps that we absolutely love what we do (and each other).

The future for VCS feels bright and exciting. Where exactly will we go next? That's to be determined. But as long as we get to spend our days helping vets build their confidence at the microscope, we'll be here nerding out with you all.
